Raleigh Chopper: The definitive history and collectors’ guide
The Raleigh X frame is appreciably more rigid than the usual diamond frame, while the machine as a whole is, I think, the fastest I have ridden. Raleighs were the patent-holders for the cross frame design, and the Modele Superbe X Frame was their top-of-the-line machine. The cross frame design arose because, in the s, cheaply-produced bicycles were made by unscrupulous manufacturers, and the public was often conned into buying them; invariably they were sold at auctions or from classified magazine adverts, and many were so badly made that they fell apart within a week.
I heard of one report of a cycling accident where a bicycle was split in two from behind. As a result of concern over the strength of bicycle frames, the reputable manufacturers had to find ways to reassure the public.

Nice informative piece. I was a bicycle mechanic as my first job at a Raleigh dealer in and built a few Mark V bikes out of the box. The earlier Mark IV versions I worked on always seemed a bit more “racy” but I couldn’t afford either- so I managed to buy a 78 Super Course wth my “disount” from the owner of the shop. In 92 I lucked into a January 73 G series Pro, with both the original wheels and a set of clinchers with low flange Campy record hubs included.
Still have it to this day and despite the comments about the F series 72 bikes having the best build quality, I defy anyone to ride my 73 with the “fancy lugs” and find any flaws in the frame. Great job documenting the many model, feature, and brochure changes–and the overlaps in between! I have a ’73 Mark IV, “very high” A93xx. My ’72 “high” G42xx has dimpled stays as expected.
It is a lighter shade of blue than the ‘ It also has the recessed seat binder, which was a nice touch on the guessing here pre Victor fastbacks. I have a G series with Haden Bird Mouth lugs.

Note that the serial number information below is fragmentary and incomplete, and many bikes have proven to be much newer than the serial numbers would suggest. It appears that Raleigh recycled many of the older serial numbers in later years, so there are lots of bikes from the 60s and 70s that have serial numbers that would suggest much greater age. Most older Sturmey-Archer hubs have two or three-letter model codes, which are usually stamped onto the hub shell.
Conveniently, they also usually have the month and the last two digits of the year of manufacture stamped onto the shell. This is the easiest way to date a 3-speed bicycle, if it has its original rear wheel. In , an entirely different numbering system was introduced for the higher end and subsequently Raleighs.

This page showcases some of the more interesting frames on my website — they will also be found in their own category… So you can also simply search under the different categories. All our categories can be found in the sub-menu below — clicking on the category you want look at will get you directly to that page. A problem with all frames measured ctt is that the top measuring point varies from maker to maker and I try and second guess where the maker intended his measurement to be to — some mean top of top top tube, others the very top of the seat lug, and others to the seat lug top line….
Fashion plays a great part in frame design and sizing. In the early years of the 20th century frames were sized as large as possible with virtually no seatpost showing … by contrast riders were advised in the s to have as small a frame as possible. Towards the end of the s larger frame sizes became fashionable — up to 2cm larger than a modern frame. Top tube lengths were still longer used with shorter stems.

If you are reading this for anything other than SB number sequences from the SBDU then please make sure you corroborate my information with other resources. Although the explosion of social media has meant that there are numerous Facebook groups and internet forums where information is given, I frequently see this quite simple topic explained or interpreted incorrectly over and over again. There are several sources for Worksop frame number information, but with every piece of information on the internet, the very first things you should ask yourself is… where does this information come from..?
Who wrote it..? What is their experience and background..? However, as time goes by and more information is seen, a fact with unknown provenance can become an accepted piece of data if it proves time and time again to be accurate. The start date, although not proven with any documentation as far as I am aware, seems to be an accurate piece of data, and because of this, it is becoming the accepted date.
There is only a single number from 0 to 9 to represent the year, therefore a single number will be repeated every 10 years. To decide between the decades, you need to know a little about s and s bike design. In my mind there are lots of differences between a s bike and a bike from the s — a bike will look very different to a bike.
